Although
it has been called a male aphrodisiac, vitex (or chasteberry) is best
known as
a normalizer of female sex hormone activity.
Often used to promote fertility in
women, it is a good balance for the
female reproductive system.
Valued
as a uterine tonic, vitex helps to restore the natural
estrogen-progesterone
balance, and is beneficial during menopause.
It stimulates pituitary gland functions,
and may also help to rebalance
the body after the use of birth control pills.
Vitex
may regulate the menstrual cycle, particularly if endometriosis is
present. It may also regulate the
ovulatory cycle for women who wish to become pregnant and has been
known to
prevent miscarriage. Although it may be
safe to take beyond the third month of pregnancy, there is a
possibility that
it may bring on premature milk flow.
While
this remarkable herb starts working to treat imbalances after about ten
days,
the complete benefit may take up to six months or more.
Other conditions that may respond to
vitex
include:
- Hormone-related
constipation
- Hot
flashes
- Fibroid
cysts
- Acne
control for teenagers
- Excessive
or
frequent menstrual bleeding
- Low
energy
- Cramping
- Uterine
healing after childbirth
- Mood
swings
The
Co-op offers vitex (chasteberry) in tincture, single and combination
capsule
and bulk dried berry forms.
